Creating a Practical IT Security Policy

NIYO1 min read

A security policy sets clear expectations for how staff use technology and protect information. It does not need to be long to be effective.

What to include

  • Acceptable use of company devices and accounts
  • Password and authentication requirements
  • How to handle confidential information
  • Rules for working remotely and on public Wi-Fi
  • How to report incidents

Keep it readable

Write in plain language. A short policy that everyone reads is better than a long document nobody understands.

Make it part of onboarding

Introduce the policy to new staff on their first day and ask them to confirm they have read it.

Review it regularly

Technology and threats change. Review the policy at least once a year.

A clear policy turns security from a technical topic into everyone's shared responsibility.
