Writing Clear Requirements for a Technology Project

NIYO1 min read

Many technology projects fail not because of poor development but because of unclear requirements. Good requirements describe what the business needs in a way everyone understands.

Describe the user and the goal

User stories such as 'As a branch manager, I want to see daily sales so that I can adjust staffing' keep the focus on real needs.

Be specific about rules

Spell out business rules, such as approval limits or calculation methods, with examples.

Include acceptance criteria

  • What must happen for the feature to be considered done?
  • What should happen when something goes wrong?
  • Who will confirm it works?

Keep requirements alive

Requirements will change as people learn. Keep them in a shared place and update them when decisions are made.

Clear requirements save time for everyone. They are the bridge between business knowledge and technical delivery.
